Boogie: "Out My Way (Bitter Raps II)"

Boogie cashed in and still isn’t happy. Last year, the Compton-bred, Long Beach-based rapper spun a national hit—the Jahlil Beats-produced “Oh My”—and its attendant regional buzz into a deal with Interscope. His 2015 mixtape, The Reach, cemented him as one of the funniest, smartest, and most disarmingly confessional young rappers in the world. Like his breakout mixtape from the year prior, it was released on his beloved son’s June birthday.

This week, he dropped two new songs: “Catching Feelings,” which features the Chicago upstart (and Timbaland protégé) Tink, and “Out My Way (Bitter Raps II),” the sequel to his breakout hit from 2014. (Both new songs are expected to appear on the forthcoming Thirst 48 Pt. 2. ) The original “Bitter Raps” touches on a litany of topics: pill poppers, YG biters, “I hate when bitches call me ‘bro’ when I’ve already seen ‘em naked.” The redux leans more heavily on social media mores, mocking dudes who schedule dates to procure Instagram content or take videos that might as well be selfies. The beat, courtesy of Keyel and Amaire Johnson, is massive, sprawling. And Boogie manages to sneak in the best rebuke of 2016 so far: “Know some niggas do photography just to see these hoes naked/ Cool hustle, bro.” The table seems set for him to follow Vince and Kendrick and YG into the limelight, but none of you know how to act on Instagram, and Boogie’s not about to let that slide.
