Hear Kaytranada and Anderson .Paak’s "Glowed Up" Meeting of the Minds

In January, Anderson .Paak released a triumphant Kaytranada production, a track titled “Lite Weight,” as part of the L.A. rapper and singer/songwriter’s outstanding Malibu LP. On that song, the Montreal beatmaker set the Dr. Dre affiliate’s sing-song verses amid choral backing vocals and sleekly pounding electro-funk. It was a propitious meeting. .Paak is dominating every track in sight recently, not least UK duo Snakehips’ similarly deft new “Money on Me.” Meanwhile, Kaytranda is preparing his debut album, 99.9%, featuring such worthies as AlunaGeorge, Little Dragon, BADBADNOTGOOD, Vic Mensa, and the Internet’s Syd.

Only a few months after .Paak and Kaytranada’s Malibu collaboration comes their meeting for 99.9%, and it’s even more impressive. “Glowed Up” is a two-part suite and a testament to both musicians’ talents. The first half glides languidly, with mellow boasts, glistening synths, and the occasional spacey theremin sound over spare low-end rumble. The second half switches to percussion that’s more bustling, and leans more on .Paak’s gently reassuring vocals. “Just like I wanna be, in the hands of love,” he concludes. It’s a track where two complementary artists sound like they are right where they want to be, and the pleasure is in how they bring us into this world, too—one where .Paak’s “got enough purp to last the whole damn night, yeah,” and we get two songs for the price of one.
