iLoveMakonnen: "Club Goin Up on a Tuesday" [ft. Drake]

Drake didn’t need to remix “Club Going Up on a Tuesday”, but it’s a good thing he did. Considering how early tracks like “Sex, Love, Ecstasy” and the almost indescribable “Tonight” had iLoveMakonnen poised to be some sort of #based James Ferraro, the Atlantan artist was teetering on the edge between cult fandom and subtweet punchlines. Thankfully, his I Love Makonnen EP dropped before he could land on either side, and its unassumingly infectious lead single quickly established itself as the go-to answer for “Who the hell is iLoveMakonnen?” Over 75,000 hard-earned YouTube views and a Miley Cyrus shout out is nothing to sniff at after you’ve spent about three prolific years trying to emerge from Tumblr obscurity; a co-sign from OVO and a free verse from Drizzy, though? Well, sometimes hard work just has to make way for pure dumb luck.

The most surprising part of this remix isn’t that it features Drake, it’s what he does with his time on “Tuesday”—more specifically, how he sounds. One of iLoveMakonnen’s countless sing-along lyrics comes during the bridge, when he croons softly in auto-tune, “I made it on my own, I made my own style,” and Drake wholeheartedly affirms the sentiment during his weighty appearance. Doing his best impression, the rap star lifts his voice an octave, tries on a warbling vocal effect. He follows the up-and-comer’s original cadence and melody, dropping staccato lines (“Ain’t got no motherfuckin time to party on the weekend”) over Sonny Digital’s and Metro Boomin’s steely, slow-bumping beat. Somehow, this summertime sleeper hit has become a self-fulfilling prophecy: iLoveMakonnen worked tirelessly to get to this point in his career, and now with a proper success under his belt, he can finally party like it’s a Tuesday.
