Joey Purp and Chance the Rapper’s “Girls @” Is Ideal Summer Rap

The thumping kick that opens “Girls @” will make even casual hip-hop fans instantly say “Neptunes,” which means that everyone will turn it up. The producer’s name is Knox Fortune, who also sourced the roller-rink insta-classic “All Night” on Chance the Rapper’s Coloring Book, and the rapper is Joey Purp, a member in Chance’s SaveMoney Crew with a dry, chuckling voice. Oh, and Chance is here, giggling his way through all the bottle-popping and VIP service; in a minute, he rhymes “Ta-Nehisi Coates” with “SpottieOttieDope” and hits on a girl while asking to borrow her iPhone and her car. Joey slows down to a perfect, deadpan “club flow,” the kind that invites you to complete the lines as he raps them the first time you hear it. The whole song is almost cartoonishly appealing, like a stretch limo riding over Whoopee cushions.
