Samantha Urbani: "1 2 3 4"

Since leaving her band Friends a few years back, Samantha Urbani has been a collaborator on several Blood Orange tracks, as well as a one-off with Ssion and Seth Bogart (aka Hunx). “1 2 3 4″, which may or may not appear on her solo debut, finds Urbani’s funked-out rebirth somewhere on the cusp of “Material Girl”, dripping in syrupy soul and potent bass lines.

Considering Urbani was in the band behind the overnight blog-hit “I’m His Girl”, it’s no shock that this collaboration pulls out all the stops, with Friends bassist Matthew Molnar, Dev Hynes, and co-producer Sam Mehran (Test Icicles) all contributing. Groovy percussion clammers through glistening keyboards, baby stepping on the essence of iconic New York disco thumps, as the woes of a past relationship come alive on the dancefloor. Sultry trills echo out of focus and pinch a nerve as Urbani sings, “I don’t need to settle the score/ You are the perpetrator,” triggering that proverbial finger snap and hair flip that made Paula Abdul’s “Cold Hearted” the perfect anthem for girls who need to shake it up, while they shake him off.
