Towkio and Joey Purp Show Crew Love on “Playin Fair”

On “Playin Fair,” Towkio and Joey Purp sound like two old friends locked in a backseat free style session. The pair have shared the microphone many times, but here the chemistry between the Chicago rappers is unparalleled. They attack the ominous instrumental like a veteran tag team, building off of each other’s momentum, handing out bars like drop-kicks, showing off their talents without overshadowing one another.

The steady rise of the pair’s Savemoney crew—which also includes Chance the Rapper, Vic Mensa, and Donnie Trumpet among others—is the song’s unifying theme. Each rapper illustrates their collective’s triumphant strives forward, with Towkio declaring “I ain’t got no homies/Man, I only got family.” Though only two members of Savemoney are present, “Playin Fair” still, in a sense, pays tribute to the spirit of the posse cut. It serves a reminder that Savemoney has come a long way, and despite the media’s clamoring around apparent fault lines between its members, the only people who need to be worried are other teams.
