Arcade Fire’s Régine Chassagne Receives Honorary Doctorate

On Monday, November 7, Arcade Fire’s Régine Chassagne was awarded an honorary doctorate at Montreal’s Concordia University, where she received her B.A. in 1998. Chassagne received the new degree “for her commitment to Haiti and her impact on the international music scene.” In her acceptance speech, she discusses her parents, her experience at Concordia, and more. Chassagne is the co-founder of KANPE, a charity for Haiti. For the last four years, she has hosted a benefit event called KANPE KANAVAL. This past spring, Arcade Fire received the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award at the Juno Gala Dinner & Awards. Chassagne accepted the honor on the band’s behalf, and discussed their relationship with Partners in Health, a nonprofit organization that helps provide health care to poverty-stricken areas of the world. Since 2006, Arcade Fire have donated $1 of each concert ticket they’ve sold to the organization.

Earlier this week, Arcade Fire announced their first show of 2017, which will take place in June at the Isle of Wight Festival in the UK. The band are working on the follow-up to Reflektor, and recently asked an audience to provide vocals for the record.
