Aretha Franklin: “I Am Retiring This Year”

Aretha Franklin plans to stop performing in concert after recording a new LP this September, according to an interview with Detroit’s WDIV Local 4. “I must tell you, I am retiring this year,” Franklin told the NBC-affiliated TV station. “This will be my last year. I will be recording, but this will be my last year in concert. This is it.” She said she’ll continue to do “some select things, many one a month, for six months out of the year.” She also revealed that Stevie Wonder would produce several songs on the album, which will feature only original songs.

Franklin said:

I feel very, very enriched and satisfied with respect to where my career came from, and where it is now. I’ll be pretty much satisfied, but I’m not going to go anywhere and just sit down and do nothing. That wouldn’t be good either.
