Baltimore Officials Shut Down Bell Foundry Arts Space for Safety Violations

Baltimore housing and fire officials have shuttered and condemned the Bell Foundry, a studio and recording space that regularly hosted live music, The Baltimore Sun reports. Following the warehouse fire that killed multiple people at a similar arts space in Oakland, city officials reportedly received a complaint and found “numerous safety violations as well as deplorable conditions,” fire department spokesman Roman Clark told the Sun. (Clark said the complaint prompted the investigation, “not necessarily the fire in Oakland.”) The fire department have barred tenants from entering. The housing department have boarded the building up and posted notices that the space has been condemned.

Baltimore band Lower Dens tweeted their support for artists affected by the news.
