Bay Area singer Dan Hicks has died, following a two-year battle with throat and liver cancer. His wife, CT Hicks, posted the news on his Facebook page. He was 74.

Hicks was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and moved to Northern California when he was 5. In 1965, he became the drummer for the San Francisco folk rock group the Charlatans. He then went on to form Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, who released their debut album Original Recordings in 1969 on Epic Records. The Hot Licks made three more albums before disbanding in 1973. Hicks released It Happened in One Bite under his own name in 1978. Then, in 1998, he shared a record of unreleased recordings, Early Muses. He also made one record with the Acoustic Warriors, 1994′s Shootin’ Straight. Hicks revived the Hot Licks name in 2000, releasing four more studio albums.

Hicks described his sound as “Folk Jazz.” Jessica Pratt once called his song “I Scare Myself” her favorite song of all time.
