Betty Davis Film Nasty Gal Seeks Funding

Betty Davis Film Nasty Gal Seeks Funding

Betty Davis, once married to Miles Davis, made some excellent and controversial funk records in the 1970s that were reissued in recent years by Light in the Attic. She vanished from the public eye, but a new film being made with Davis’ cooperation looks to tell her story. Nasty Gal: The Many Lives of Funk Queen Betty Davis, directed by Phil Cox and Damon Smith, is currently seeking funding via Indiegogo.

Davis has signed exclusive life rights with Native Voice Films, the production company behind the film. They’re seeking funding to pay music licensing fees, to unearth the Davis’ archive, and to cover travel expenses in order for the crew to interview Davis’ friends and contemporaries.

In addition to interviews and rare/unseen footage, the film will feature “fact-based, cinematic reconstructions performed by a high-profile actress/music personality and scripted with Betty’s own words”. They’re also planning to film a live concert in Pittsburgh. All the proceeds of the concert will go directly to Davis, and the filmmakers are hoping Davis will make her first public appearance in decades at the show.

Rewards for backing the film include items autographed by Davis, your name in the credits, a mixtape curated by Davis, a download of the film, T-shirts, a tour of Davis’ New York City, a seat at the world premiere, and more. Find more info here.
