Beyonce Issues Urgent Call to Action: “Stop Killing Us”

Over the past two days, two black men have been shot and killed by police officers. On Tuesday, 37-year-old Alton Sterling was killed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Wednesday, 32-year-old Philando Castile was shot as he reached for his wallet during a traffic stop in Minnesota. Beyoncé has responded to the tragedies in a post on her website called “Freedom” (also the name of her song with Kendrick Lamar on Lemonade). Written in all-caps, she issues an urgent call to action: “It is up to us to take a stand and demand that they ‘stop killing us.’” Read the full essay below.

Along with “Freedom,” Beyoncé provided links to contact your Congressperson, voice protest for Alton Sterling, and voice protest for Philando Castile. She writes, “We all have the power to channel our anger and frustration into action. We must use our voices to contact the politicians and legislators in our districts and demand social and judicial changes.”

Beyoncé’s response follows her sister Solange’s cover of Syreeta’s “Black Maybe,” an open letter from Drake, and reactions from Chance the Rapper, Questlove, Blood Orange, Shamir, and more.
