Burial’s New Record Young Death Surfaces

A new Burial 12″ on Hyperdub called Young Death has surfaced on Discogs. It was listed online after copies of the record were available for sale yesterday (Black Friday) at the Toronto shop Sonic Boom Records, an employee of the shop confirmed to Pitchfork. The Discogs listing notes that it features two new songs: “Young Death” and “Nightmarket.” It’s currently unclear when the record will be widely available. This would be Burial’s first solo release in 2016. When contacted about the new release, Hyperdub offered Pitchfork no comment.

Blair Whatmore, a record buyer at Sonic Boom, told Pitchfork that five copies of the record were sold “accidentally” due to a misunderstanding. “[The box the records came in] said ‘artist/title,’” he said. “We assumed it was a Black Friday secret listing. It wasn’t really clear to us that we weren’t supposed to be selling it.” He said this morning when he got to the store, he got a call from someone who works at Hyperdub, who “was not happy” that the record had been sold.

Earlier in the year, Burial teamed up with Zomby for “Sweetz,” a track from Zomby’s new album UltraIn February, his albums were repressed on vinyl. In 2015, Burial released a white label single called “Temple Sleeper.” The producer’s previous record was 2013’s Rival Dealer EP
