This week, Sleater-Kinney‘s Carrie Brownstein released her new memoir Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl. She discussed the book with Stephen Colbert on last night’s “The Late Show”. They touched on the book’s title (“hunger makes me hangry,” joked Colbert), their appreciation of awkward situations, whether or not she’s “cool,” and how performing as a comedian compares to performing with Sleater-Kinney. Watch a clip below, or head here to watch the full episode.

Brownstein also appeared in an extra, backstage skit, titled “Somber Grrrl”. “Playing in Sleater-Kinney has been a great opportunity for me,” she says in the clip, “but sometimes I feel like it prevented me from performing the kind of music I personally enjoy. That’s why our hiatus was great: It gave me a chance to work on my favorite musical genre: traditional English folk ballads.” Below, watch her perform her personal pick, “The Hunter and His Pallid Bride”.
