Cash Money Sues Jay-Z, Tidal For $50 Million Over Lil Wayne’s The Free Weezy Album

Cash Money Sues Jay-Z, Tidal For $50 Million Over Lil Wayne's The Free Weezy Album

Earlier this month, Lil Wayne released his new mixtape The Free Weezy Album exclusively through Jay Z‘s Tidal streaming service. It marked the latest chapter in a long legal drama between Lil Wayne and Cash Money over the delayed release of Tha Carter V. Today, Cash Money struck back against Wayne and Jay Z with a $50 million lawsuit. As TMZ reports, Cash Money is suing Tidal for streaming The Free Weezy Album, claiming exclusive rights to Wayne’s music and lambasting Tidal’s promotion as “a desperate and illegal attempt to save their struggling streaming service.”

According to the lawsuit, Tidal has defended its actions by claiming that Wayne gave the service permission to stream his music in exchange for partial ownership of the company. Cash Money, meanwhile, maintains that Wayne’s contract contains a clause specifically forbidding the artist from licensing his music to outside parties without their consent. In the same suit, Cash Money also states on the record that The Free Weezy Album recieved “tepid” reviews, making it a potential loss for the company.

News of the lawsuit follows today’s earlier indictment of Birdman and Young Thug for their involvement in a shooting on Lil Wayne’s tour bus last April.  Young Thug’s tour manager, Jimmy Winfrey, was charged with the shooting itself.
