Chance the Rapper: Celebrities Have a “Responsibility” to Call Out the Justice System

On August 25, ESPN will present a panel about athletes, guns, violence, and law enforcement. It’s called “An Undefeated Conversation: Athletes, Responsibility, and Violence,” and it will take place in Chicago. Among the panel participants are Chicago Bulls guard Rajon Rondo, Basketball Hall-of-Famer Isiah Thomas, and more. It has also been reported that Chance the Rapper will participate in the forum. He will not, as he clarified today on Twitter. Because he will not be on the panel, Chance used the opportunity to discuss “responsibility.”

He said that “it is the responsibility of our court systems to fully represent & work for The People in all cases of Murder.” He added that “it is the responsibility of media outlets to correctly label all killings by 1st responders as what they are: Murders.” He also called on fellow celebrities to speak out when the court system, media, and first responders don’t fulfill their responsibilities. See all of Chance’s tweets below.

Chance has spoken out against police violence in the past. After the killing of Philando Castile, he asked, “These guys murdered this man with his 4 year old daughter in the backseat? Is there any situation where police get arrested? Or convicted?”

I saw some publications report that I’ll be at the @espn forum about athletes’ and celebrities’ responsibility to speak on issues. Not true.

@espn it is the responsibility of all first responders to deescalate unlawful situations and restore peace without committing murder.

@espn and it is the responsibility of athletes and celebrities to say all that out loud whether at a forum, on twitter or at work.
