Ciara No Longer Suing Future for Libel Because She's Gotten Too Successful

In January, Ciara sued Future, her former fiancé, for alleged slander and libel. He countersued, claiming that he couldn’t have harmed her reputation because her career was failing. More recently, Future dropped that suit after a ruling that gave him joint custody of his and Ciara’s son. Ciara, though, kept up her case, contending that Future was threatening to murder her husband, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. Now, she has ended most, but not all, of her legal battle against Future.

Ciara has dropped her remaining defamation claim against Future, after a judge threw out a separate claim earlier this year, TMZ reports. Online court records viewed by Pitchfork confirmed a dismissal of one claim on June 13 and a “dismissal with prejudice” of another on October 19. According to TMZ, Ciara’s lawyer said in a legal filing that—contrary to Future’s previous claim that Ciara is washed up—she has been too successful since the alleged defamation to have a case, because she wouldn’t be able to show Future’s words hurt her financially. Ciara is reportedly still suing Future for a similar claim known as “false light,” which doesn’t need proof of harm.
