Courtney Barnett Breaks Down "Depreston" on "Song Exploder" Podcast

On the podcast “Song Exploder”, Hrishikesh Hirway asks artists to break down their songs and discuss how they’re made. The latest episode features Courtney Barnett on her single “Depreston,” from Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit. In it, she describes how the song was inspired by the Go-Betweens’ “Streets of Your Town” and a morbid househunting trip in the town of Preston. Listen above.

“I could always hear a group singing that refrain,” Barnett said of the song’s chorus. “That was my idea, but when I actually did it, it didn’t sound right. … It felt a bit too cheery, a bit too Seasame Street. So we kept it pretty simple.”

The next installment of “Song Exploder” will feature MGMT on “Time to Pretend.”
