Danny Brown Enlists Kendrick Lamar, Earl Sweatshirt, More for New Album Atrocity Exhibition

Danny Brown has detailed his new album, the follow-up to 2013’s Old. As previously revealed on Twitter, it’s called Atrocity Exhibition and it’s coming out September 30 via Warp. Today, via Rolling Stone, he’s revealed the tracklist, which features Kendrick Lamar, Earl Sweatshirt, Kelela, Ab-Soul, B-Real, and Petite Noir, as well as production from Evian Christ, Black Milk, and Alchemist. Recorded in London with longtime collaborator Paul White, the album was influenced by Raekwon, early Björk, Joy Division, Talking Heads, and System of a Down’s Toxicity, according to Rolling Stone. Below, check out Timothy Saccenti’s album art and the tracklist, and scroll down revisit the single “When It Rain.”

Talking about the album title, Brown told Rolling Stone:

I just relate to that song a lot. That song, [Ian Curtis is] pretty much talking about how he feels like he’s part of a freak show almost. People just wanna come see him and they just wanna see him be a certain type of way. I totally relate to that. That’s just how I felt with this album, ’cause a lot of people expect for me to be some crazy drugged-out I-don’t-know. At the end of the day, its just something that I really took my time with,” adds the rapper. “I know this day and age, a lot of artists can’t really take time off to make music … they’ll get replaced. With me, [I'm] somebody that’s able to sit down and be able to take my time, ’cause aint nobody gonna be out here sounding like me, ain’t nobody gonna be out here doing what I do. I’m confident in this project to know that I’mma satisfy the people that’s already fans of my music. So, if you’re a fan of Danny Brown, you in for a treat.

He added that the album’s samples cost $70,000 to clear. “A lot of people cheap. And that’s why their music sounds cheap. I wanna make timeless stuff, so you’re gonna have to spend a couple dollars. You could have Rolex or you can have a Swatch.”

Brown recently shared a photo from the studio with Top Dawg engineer MixedByAli and wrote that they were “putting the final touches on [his] next masterpiece.” In an interview with Zane Lowe on his Beats 1 radio show Brown told Lowe that Talking Heads were a large influence on the album. Atrocity Exhibition takes its name from the Joy Division song named after a book by English author J.G. Ballard. Brown has also announced The Exhibition Tour, with Maxo Kream and Zelooperz joining him on the road. See those dates below.
