David Bowie Co-Writing Stage Show Based on The Man Who Fell to Earth

David Bowie is co-writing Lazarus, a theater production based on 1976′s The Man Who Fell to Earth, The New York Times reports. The play will tell a story featuring Bowie’s character Thomas Newton, an alien who explores life on Earth. It’ll feature new Bowie songs, along with re-arranged versions of old songs. 

The play will be co-written with Enda Walsh, who won a Tony Award for writing the stage adaptation of 2007′s Once. The director is Ivo van Hove.

“It’s going to be a play with characters and songs — I’m calling it music theater, but I don’t really know what it’s going to be like, I just have incredible trust in their creative vision,” James C. Nicola, the artistic director at the New York Theater Workshop, which will be presenting the play, told the Times. “I’m really excited about it. These are three very different sensibilities to be colliding.”

Lazarus will open later this year. While the play was Bowie’s idea, he will not appear in it.
