Dev Hynes, Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek, Dan Deacon, SOPHIE Scoring "Authority Figure" Performance Piece
“Authority Figure” is a performance art piece and “social psychology experiment” that will bring together performers, installation artists, choreographers, and musicians. It’s a collaborative piece centered around the theme of “authority” created by FlucT‘s Monica Mirabile and Otion Front partner Sarah Kinlaw. It takes place at Knockdown Center in Queens, N.Y. from May 20-22. Dev Hynes (Blood Orange), Caroline Polachek (Chairlift), Dan Deacon, SOPHIE, Pictureplane, Eartheater, and Hot Sugar will all contribute original music to the event, Fader reports. Mirabile and Kinlaw shared a statement about the project with Fader:
“Everyone’s relationship to authority is layered and complex, including ours. Whether we are children, employers, bitches, cops and/or lovers, we have to deal with our relationships to obedience. Obedience and authority exist on a spectrum, we fluctuate between agency and insecurity on the daily. Authority Figure is choreography of the systems that program our obedient identities so that we can move through them and start to understand our relationships to each other. It’s about performing agency and responsibility or the point when you shift from observer to participant.”
