Dinosaur Jr. Cover Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer" With Fred Armisen and Lee Ranaldo

Dinosaur Jr. have a week-long residency going at New York’s Bowery Ballroom to commemorate the 30th anniversary of their debut album Dinosaur. Last night, they were joined by Fred Armisen and Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo, who helped them cover Neil Young‘s Zuma classic “Cortez the Killer”. Ranaldo sang while Armisen played a second drum kit behind the band’s usual drummer Murph. In addition to the Young cover, Dinosaur Jr. and Armisen played “Hey Policeman!”, a song Armisen wrote for the fictional band Ian Rubbish and the Bizarros. Watch both songs below, via Noisey.

The previous night, Dinosaur Jr. covered “Cortez the Killer” with Kurt Vile. They also played “Don’t” from their album Bug with Kim Gordon. Watch them do both below, via Stereogum.

It’s been a busy week of covers for Vile, Gordon, and Ranaldo. Vile and Gordon did a Velvet Underground song with Steve Gunn, and Vile also tackled a Bob Dylan song with Woods. Ranaldo played Sonic Youth’s “Mote” and “Eric’s Trip” with Parquet Courts.

It was not J Mascis’ first time covering “Cortez the Killer”. Read our Guest List with him.
