Drake Says Sade Chose Jay Z Over Him, Gives More Life Update in New Interview

Drake was the guest on a recent episode of “Cal Cast,” a podcast hosted by John Calipari—the head coach of the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team. During the conversation, the two discussed a wide range of topics, including Drake’s competitive attitude and his relationship with his parents. They also touched on Drake’s upcoming releases, as well as his plans to venture into different fields—acting, in particular. Listen to the full episode below.

Regarding his upcoming More Life project, Drake reiterated that it’s a playlist collaboration with Apple. He compared the release to a mixtape, referring to it as “a body of work that [he’s] creating to bridge the gap between [his] major releases.”

Drake also discussed his influences, giving a special shoutout to Sade (who sent him a 30th birthday present). He revealed that he had hoped to appear on a 2010 remix of “The Moon and the Sky” by his longtime collaborator Noah “40” Shebib, but Sade chose to go with Jay Z instead. “I was this closing to being on it,” Drake said about his “Sade moment,” “but my star wasn’t there yet for her to hear me out.”

Additionally, he cited Aaliyah as a major influence on his songwriting process: “She’s part of the reason why I decided to sing and rap.” Later, he discussed her ability to blur gender barriers: “I tried to do the same thing from a male perspective where I would make music for women to listen to but guys wouldn’t feel uncomfortable playing it.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Drake discussed his plans for the rest of the year, which include producing and hosting the first annual NBA Awards. (Previously, Drake hosted the ESPY Awards in 2014.) Additionally, he plans to “dive into” his acting career following the release of More Life and completion of his current tour. “I’m going to really start to position myself in the acting world and, hopefully, take some great roles,” he said, before discussing his dream of hosting a Johnny Carson-style late night talk show.
