El-P Vows to Stop Wearing “Triggering” Red Hats After Trump Election

Earlier today, EL-P took to Twitter to vow he’d stop wearing red hats in the wake of Donald Trump’s recent election victory. A signature item of Trump’s campaign were red baseball caps inscribed with his slogan (“Make America Great Again”). EL-P realized that the “red hat thing” was “no joke” after a “few white friends” told him how they realized “POC/women” seemed nervous around them while wearing red hats. The item of clothing has “become a trigger for stress and fear and a sign of ideals,” that he doesn’t want to “rep even from a distance.”

He notes in another tweet that he’s made recent donations to Planned Parenthood. EL-P also said that he thinks people may interpret Run the Jewel’s upcoming album as an “election reaction” even though it was “written before the election.” You can find his tweets below.

red hat thing is no joke. few white friends told me about realizing POC/women seeming nervous around them and it dawning on them: red hat.

Earlier this week, EL-P’s Run the Jewels bandmate Killer Mike appeared on “The Real” to discuss why Trump won the election. They also recently released a new Run the Jewels song called “2100,” explaining that the song was “for everyone who is hurting or scared right now.” In October, they shared Run the Jewels 3’s debut single “Talk to Me.”
