Fat White Family Talk Style and Inspiration, Perform in Brooklyn on Pitchfork.tv
British band Fat White Family performed at the Brooklyn venue Baby’s All Right in December in support of last year’s debut Champagne Holocaust. Pitchfork.tv was there to document the show. They sat down with lead singer Lias Saoudi and his brother Nathan (who’s the band’s organist). They chat about their sexually-charged style, their sources of inspiration, and how the depravity of the past informs their art today.
The band discuss using figures like the Fall’s Mark E. Smith and Ike Turner for inspiration. “Everybody’s got a universal admiration for these characters that are wife-beating, drunk, adult scumbags,” explains Saoudi. “What the implications are to that for everybody else…that’s what I’m interested in, that position, and where that position is to everybody else. You really dig these records, but they’re about pure evil.”
