Father John Misty Explains “Obscenely Vulnerable” Festival Performance

Yesterday in Camden, New Jersey, Father John Misty was on hand to perform at XPN Festival. Instead of performing songs from his albums, he spent most of his set discussing the state of the world. He decried the effect entertainment has on people (“stupidity just fucking runs the world because entertainment is stupid”), and when the crowd cheered for him at one point, he asked them not to. “Maybe just take a moment to be really fucking profoundly sad,” he said. Then, he performed a new improvised piece and covered Leonard Cohen. In a new statement, he discussed what he was going through at the time, referencing how he felt the day after Donald Trump’s Republican National Convention speech while standing on stage near a battleship. Read his comments below and find footage from his performance here.
