Father John Misty Explains Taylor Swift Line From “Total Entertainment Forever”

Last night, Father John Misty performed a new song called “Total Entertainment Forever” on “Saturday Night Live.” The song features the lyric, “Bedding Taylor Swift every night inside the Oculus Rift/After mister and the missus finish dinner and the dishes.” Now, he’s explained the line in a new interview with Exclaim!, revealing that it’s a critique of the way we consume entertainment today. “Human civilizations have been entertaining themselves in disgusting ways all through human history,” he said. “We have to consider that maybe there are ways in which we entertain ourselves now that are equally as disturbing.”

“The fact of the matter is, I don’t want that to happen to Taylor Swift. That is the worst thing I can think of; that is so horrible,” he told Exclaim! “But again, this plays into progress, where like, the internet was supposed to be this new democracy, a utopia of information where everyone had a voice and we were all interconnected, and we would experience true democracy—and it turned into pornography, followed only by outrage.” He later adds, “And if you don’t think that this virtual reality thing isn’t going to turn into sex with celebrities, then you’re kidding yourself.”

The lyric on “Total Entertainment Forever” follows Taylor Swift covers Father John Misty shared in 2015 (done in the style of “Ryan Adams via the Smiths via the Velvet Underground”). He also shared a story about taking acid at a Swift concert (which apparently inspired that Lana Del Rey video). His new album, Pure Comedy, is out April 7 (via Sub Pop/Bella Union).
