Flea Performs Bass-Only National Anthem at Kobe Bryant’s Final Game: Watch

Tonight, as the L.A. Lakers play the Utah Jazz, Kobe Bryant is playing his final game. Prior to the game, Flea came out to play the national anthem. That’s right—Kobe’s last game was kicked off by a patriotic bass solo. It wasn’t the first time Flea has performed the national anthem at a Lakers game without his fellow Red Hot Chili Peppers (or Atoms for Peace) bandmates, but what an incredible and absurd way to send off Kobe. Flea discussed his admiration for Kobe with Rolling Stone. “I look at him as someone like, you know, Charlie Parker or John Coltrane or Jimmy Page or Jimi Hendrix, you know?” he said. “He’s been able to change and evolve and grow and be such a master of his craft. It’s been great seeing him grow up, because he joined the Lakers when he was 17, and he’s done so much for our city.” Flea once called an ESPN article about Kobe “absolute garbage.”
