Flying Lotus and Pharrell Discuss the State of Hip-Hop, Aphex Twin on Beats 1: Watch

Flying Lotus was a guest on Pharrell and Scott Vener‘s Beats 1 show “OTHERtone.” The three of them sat down for a conversation about their love of Aphex Twin’s music, the changing role of producers in hip-hop culture, Flying Lotus’ theory that music sounds better in the region where it was created, the disposability of music in “the Snapchat generation,” music discovery, and the state of hip-hop. “Here’s the good part—there’s room for everybody now,” Flying Lotus said. “You can be super lyrical, or you can just ride the beat barely rhymin’, and it’s all good.” They also discussed the decline in storytelling in popular hip-hop. The episode also featured a new mix from Nosaj Thing. Watch an 11-minute video of Pharrell, Vener, and Flying Lotus’ conversation below.

In his interview with Pitchfork, Flying Lotus revealed that he wrote a song on his album You’re Dead! with Pharrell in mind.
