Glastonbury Pays Tribute to Bowie, Prince Lemmy With Crazy, Enormous Sculptures

Glastonbury takes place June 22-26. Today, the festival announced plans to pay tribute to the late David Bowie, Prince, and Motörhead‘s Lemmy, as The Guardian reports. A massive Ziggy Stardust lightning bolt will be constructed and placed on top of the Pyramid stage, where headliners like Adele, Tame Impala, and Coldplay will perform. The lightning bolt will be surrounded by two silver wings, with an eye placed in the center. For Prince, a statue of a giant hand holding a purple crown, with a white dove flying above it, will be placed at the festival’s Park area. Finally, Lemmy will be honored via a giant peace sign decorated with an ace of spades, a set of ram’s horns, and a v-twin engine, which will be placed at the Other stage.

Of the Bowie statue, sculptor Joe Rush told The Guardian: “It felt important to capture Bowie’s very particular eye, which was such a part of his look. But I also really liked the idea of Bowie looking out and watching over the whole festival. And if we are going to have an eye in the pyramid, it should be Bowie’s eye.”

Musical tributes to Bowie and Prince will also take place. On the Saturday of the festival, a 50-piece orchestra will perform Philip Glass’ “Heroes Symphony,” which is based on Bowie’s “Heroes” album. Meanwhile, Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor will play a Prince-focused DJ set on the Friday of the festival. “I found it quite hard initially when he died to listen to Prince because when you feel sad in that way, you expect to listen to sad sorrowful music, but there isn’t so much of that in Prince,” Taylor told The Guardian. “But I think this set is a decent enough time after the event to be in a more party frame of mind.”
