Grammys 2017: Adele Wins Album of the Year, Says It Should Have Been Beyoncé

Adele has won Album of the Year at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. 25 took the victory over records by Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Drake, and Sturgill Simpson. The singer-songwriter had also just won Record of the Year immediately before returning to the stage to accept Album of the Year. During both acceptance speeches, she spoke directly to Beyoncé, telling her how much of an inspiration she is. During her tearful Album of the Year speech, Adele called Bey “the artist of my life” and said the award should have gone to Lemonade. Beyoncé, also teary-eyed, mouthed “I love you” at Adele. Check out video below.

Backstage after the show, Adele continued discussing why she felt Beyoncé deserved to win. “I felt like it was her time to win,” she reportedly said. “What the fuck does she have to do to win album of the year?” She added, “My album of the year was Lemonade, so a piece of me did die inside, as a Beyoncé fan.”

Adele won every award she was nominated for tonight: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album. Earlier in the show, she performed “Hello” from 25, and took a moment to restart her performance of George Michael’s “Fastlove” during a tribute to the late icon.

Immediately following the end of the award ceremony, Beyoncé’s sister Solange Knowles tweeted out Frank Ocean’s recent Tumblr post, where he berated the Grammys for its “cultural bias and general nerve damage” after some of its producers called his 2013 performance on the show “faulty.” Find her tweet below as well.
