Grateful Dead Members Reunite for Final Shows

The Grateful Dead played their last show at Chicago’s Soldier Field on July 9, 1995. They formally disbanded following the death of Jerry Garcia a month later. Now, in celebration of the band’s 50th anniversary, the remaining original members of the Dead—Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir—will reunite for “Fare Thee Well”, a series of shows at Soldier Field on July 3-5. (They’ll take place almost 20 years to the day of that final concert.)

They will be accompanied by Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio, pianist Bruce Hornsby (who played with the Dead for many years), and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, who has played with Weir and Lesh in Further and RatDog.

Hart, Kreutzmann, Lesh, and Weir are saying that this is the last time they’ll all perform together. “It is with respect and gratitude that we reconvene the Dead one last time to celebrate —not merely the band’s legacy, but also the community that we’ve been playing to, and with, for fifty years,” Lesh said in a press release. “Wave that flag, wave it wide and high…”

The tickets will first be available via a mail order system at the Dead’s website. They’ll be sold electronically in February.
