Grimes, Carly Rae Jepsen, Kaytranada on Polaris Prize Shortlist

The shortlist has been revealed for the 2016 Polaris Music Prize, which honors the best album of the year by a Canadian artist. It is:

Black Mountain’s IV
Basia Bulat’s Good Advice
Grimes’ Art Angels
Carly Rae Jepsen’s E•MO•TION
Kaytranada’s 99.9%
Jessy Lanza’s Oh No
PUP’s The Dream Is Over
Andy Shauf’s The Party
U.S. Girls’ Half Free
White Lung’s Paradise

The winner will be announced September 19 at the Polaris Music Prize Gala, and will receive $50,000. Last year’s award went to Buffy Sainte-Marie‘s album Power in the Blood

Notably, Drake, the Weeknd, and Justin Bieber were left off the shortlist, after initially making the longlist. Destroyer, Peaches, and Junior Boys are some of the other longlist nominees who were left off. 

The Polaris Prize longlist and shortlist are chosen by a jury of 196 Canadian music journalists, including Pitchfork contributors Stuart Berman and Renato Pagnani.
