Gucci Mane Discusses Prison Mixtapes, Sobriety, “Black Beatles,” More on ESPN: Watch

Earlier today, Gucci Mane video-conferenced in to the ESPN sports discussion show His & Hers to be interviewed by host Jemele Hill, as The Fader points out. Check it out below. After some questions about football (Gucci roots for the Alabama Crimson Tide, as well as the Atlanta Falcons), he fields questions about a variety of topics. When asked about releasing mixtapes from prison, he replied, “While I was away, I came up with a strategy. I was like I wanted to have a presence even though I wasn’t physically there. So I just instructed my team, I said, ‘Every song that I record, everything that’s on my computer, on my hard drive, we’re going to release it. Just a way to make money and keep my name going while I was away.”

Later on, Gucci is asked about his sobriety since being released. “[Prison] changed me. It gave me the time to just sit back and evaluate my life, and just look at all the mistakes and all the things that I did wrong and that I needed to correct,” he said. “And to insure that I don’t come back into this prison I’m just gonna be totally sober.”

On “Black Beatles,” his Rae Sremmurd collaboration (that just cracked the Billboard Top 10): “It’s a huge accomplishment. I’m so grateful just to be on that track. I thank Rae Sremmurd and Mike Will for putting me on it because it went Gold last week. So that’s the biggest record right now in America, and I’m just proud of it.”

Gucci’s latest album Woptober arrived this past fall, and the rapper is planning on dropping another one, The Return of East Atlanta Santa, in December.
