Iconic New York Art Center ABC No Rio Getting Demolished, Rebuilt

ABC No Rio is a New York institution. The art center, housed in a brick tenement on the Lower East Side, has been exploring the cross-section between art and activism since 1980. They’ve hosted shows, house an extensive zine library, made space for art classes, and so much more. Soon, the building will be demolished, forcing the collective to “go into exile” until they move into a new space at the same location, The New York Times reports. It’s set to shut down in June. Eventually, the collective will move into a new energy efficient replacement building designed by architect Paul Castrucci. Over the years, ABC No Rio received millions of dollars in private donations and grants. The space’s weekly Saturday punk shows will be housed in other venues including the Silent Barn.

Correction: The original headline stated ABC No Rio is moving locations. It’s being rebuilt in the same place.
