Janelle Monáe, Maxwell Playing Women’s March in D.C.

Maxwell and Janelle Monáe are set to perform at the first Women’s March on Washington, the Associated Press reports. It takes place at the U.S. capital on January 21—the day after Inauguration Day. Monáe said in a statement, “I am honored to join this critical movement to bring justice and equality to all. Music has always been a powerful tool for galvanizing unity and I believe that singing and standing together, our voices will be stronger than any force that tries to repress us.” Maxwell commented, “We are here because women are every bit as capable if not more able to pursue any goal they set forth for themselves. Were it not for the limitless depths of their love we would not be the men that we are.” Other performers scheduled are Mary Chapin Carpenter, the Indigo Girls, and Angelique Kidjo. 

In addition to the announced performers, several artists including Grimes, Questlove, Neko Case, and Rakim are members of the march’s “artist table.” That means they’re supporting the event at the capital as well as the “sister marches” taking place across the country. Earlier today, Beyoncé voiced her support of the event. She wrote, “As #GlobalCitizens, we can make our voices heard and turn awareness into meaningful action and positive change.”

An alternative inauguration ball will take place on on January 19 with Solange, Esperanza Spalding, and others scheduled to perform. The Peace Ball takes place at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and “celebrates the accomplishments and successes of the past 4 years.” Prophets of Rage have also announced their Anti-Inaugural Ball, which takes place in L.A. on January 20 and will feature the return of Audioslave.
