Jay Z, Russell Simmons Meet With New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to Discuss Justice Reforms

Jay Z and Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons met with New York governor Andrew Cuomo yesterday to discuss criminal justice reforms, the Associated Press reports. The meeting was called in the wake of national protests over the lack of indictments for police officers in the deaths of Eric Garner in New York and Michael Brown in Missouri.

According to Simmons, Cuomo pledged to seek reforms that would appoint special prosecutors to cases involving police brutality, the AP reports. However, Melissa DeRosa, a spokesperson for the governor, said that the special prosecutor is one of several options for the reforms that Cuomo will try to pass in 2015. She characterized the meeting as “a top-to-bottom review of the criminal-justice system and how we can all work together to pass a reform package,” according to the New York Post, and also tweeted the photo below.
