Jim Jarmusch’s Iggy and the Stooges Documentary Premieres at Cannes

Jim Jarmusch’s documentary about Iggy and the Stooges, Gimme Danger, has premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. It’s named for a song from the Stooges’ Raw Power. Jarmusch and Iggy Pop spoke about the film at a press conference, during which Iggy spoke at length about his past drug use, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He told the crowd, “I was on acid in more than several of the clips in the movie when I was young. I would go from feeling very aggressive to breaking out in laughter,” but says he no longer uses drugs: “I don’t do it. I have wine with dinner and that’s about it” He also advised everybody to “just drop that shit,” adding, “For me, the best is a very good wine, but weed is OK for most people.”

Earlier this month, Jarmusch told Indiewire that Gimme Danger “is more an ‘essay’ than a document.” He said:

No other band in rock‘n’roll history has rivaled The Stooges’ combination of heavy primal throb, spiked psychedelia, blues-a-billy grind, complete with succinct angst-ridden lyrics, and a snarling, preening leopard of a front man who somehow embodies Nijinsky, Bruce Lee, Harpo Marx, and Arthur Rimbaud. There is no precedent for The Stooges, while those inspired by them are now legion…

It’s our love letter to possibly the greatest band in rock‘n’roll history, and presents their story, their influences and their impact, complete with some never-before-seen footage and photographs. Like the Stooges and their music, ‘Gimme Danger’ is a little wild, messy, emotional, funny, primitive, and sophisticated in the most unrefined way. Long live The Stooges!

Gimme Danger is being presented as part of Cannes’ Midnight Screening series, meaning it is not in competition with other films.
