John Coltrane's A Love Supreme: The Complete Masters Announced

This year marks the 50th anniversary of John Coltrane‘s iconic album A Love Supreme. On November 6, Verve Music Group will release A Love Supreme: The Complete Masters. It includes everything that happened during the album’s two-day recording sessions in 1964: every take, overdub, and recorded conversation.

The Complete Masters notably includes a second-day session featuring Coltrane and his quartet (Elvin Jones, Jimmy Garrison, and McCoy Tyner) accompanied by Archie Shepp and Dr. Art Davis. The reportedly “long-lost session reels” are meant to give a full picture of how the album evolved and developed in the studio.

The album will be available in two formats: a 2xCD set featuring the original album with mono reference versions of two tracks and seven unreleased performances. It features a 32-page booklet featuring an essay from Ashley Kahn, rare photos from the sessions, and all of Coltrane’s known musical sketches and written works that informed the album.

A 3xCD “Super Deluxe Edition” includes a performance from the Festival Mondial du Jazz Antibes in July 1965. There’s also an introduction by Carlos Santana.

Last year, Coltrane’s excellent Offering: Live at Temple University was released.
