Joy Division/New Order's Bernard Sumner Torn on Fan Campaign to Turn Ian Curtis' House Into Museum: "A Monument to Suicide"

A Joy Division fan has launched an an Indiegogo campaign to purchase the home in Macclesfield, England where Ian Curtis committed suicide, with the hopes of turning it into a museum, as NME reports. But former Joy Division member (and current New Order member) Bernard Sumner has mixed feelings about it, as he told NME.

Sumner says Curtis’ widow, Deborah, and daughter, Natalie, aren’t “too keen” on the idea. “Obviously they’re closest to it, so we have to abide by their wishes first.”

He says he’s “torn down the middle,” citing the would-be museum’s potential to be a proper tribute to Curtis. “But the other part of me is saying, it’s a bit ghoulish and it’s a bit of a monument to suicide.”

He added: “To me, it’s a place of sadness. It’s not a place I’d want to go.”
