You may have noticed Kendrick Lamar‘s history of debuting untitled, unreleased songs during his televised performances. In an interview originally conducted for Grammy.com that continued on 2 Dope Boyz, he explained he has a “chamber of material” comprising songs left off his records for various reasons, such as sample clearance issues or deadline struggles. Those songs are then recycled for TV performances.

Here’s the quote in full:

You see all these performances on these late night shows—I got a chamber of material from the album that I was in love where sample clearances or something as simple as a deadline kept it off the album. But I think probably close to ten songs that I’m in love with that I’ll still play and still perform that didn’t make the cut.

Kendrick has debuted untitled songs on “The Colbert Report” and “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” as well as at last night’s Grammys ceremony
