Killer Mike Clarifies Voting Comments: “Vote Locally, When You Vote, Ask For Something Back”

Over the weekend, Killer Mike posted comments to his Instagram account encouraging black voters to “stay the fuck home” if officials seeking election did not offer policy changes that would work for them (and caught some flack for his statement). Now, the Run the Jewels member has clarified his position in a video, also posted to Instagram. “I am voting locally,” he said. “You should vote—locally. And what I mean is, when you go to that booth… Who are your judges? Who are your prosecutors? Who are the senators that you are voting for? Get out and vote, I’m just saying, when you vote, ask for something back. So, go vote.” Watch the full video below. Near the end, Killer Mike reiterates his opinion that marijuana should be decriminalized: “Take marijuana off Schedule 1, it’ll save black people from going to jail.”

While Mike did not disclose who he is voting for in the presidential election—in August, he called voting for Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump “the same thing”—a hashtag in his Instagram video reads “#HillaryIsGonnaWinImSure.” Killer Mike represented Senator Bernie Sanders during the Democratic primaries, participating in a post-debate spin room, speaking on his behalf at a rally, and sitting on a panel with him to discuss the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
