Kurt Vile Performs, Chats on “The Best Show”: Listen

Last month, when Kurt Vile called into “The Best Show” to talk about meeting Neil YoungTom Scharpling invited him to drop by his studio in New Jersey. Last night, he did just that. In addition to performing “Pretty Pimpin” and “I’m an Outlaw” from his latest album, he talked about his Graceland, Kris Kristofferson, Suicide, the Eagles, and more. He did impressions of Royal Trux’s Jennifer Herrema and Rage Against the Machine’s Zack de la Rocha. Scharpling also told the story of the time he met Kurt Vile. Apparently, Vile and the War on Drugs’ Adam Granduciel cornered Scharpling at the final Big Star concert and drunkenly impersonated classic Scharpling & Wurster calls at him. Near the end of the episode, Kurt and Tom have a phone conversation with Kurt’s brother, Jelloman. Listen to the entire thing here; Vile shows up around the 46:30 mark.

The episode also featured conversations with Neil Hagerty (of Royal Trux and Howling Hex), who revealed that he’s about to go into the studio with Jason Pierce (Spiritualized) and Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip). Tom also sat down with Replacements biographer Bob Mehr, which led to an in-studio Scharpling & Wurster routine about the Replacements.

Kurt Vile’s “Best Show” fandom is well documented. Scharpling directed Vile’s “KV Crimes” video, and in his recent appearance on HBO’s “Animals,” his animated squirrel avatar wore a Philly Boy Roy shirt.
