Lauryn Hill and TIDAL Throwing Surprise Festival This Week

Lauryn Hill has announced Diaspora Calling!, a three-day charity festival, presented in association with TIDAL X. It takes place tonight through Friday (April 13-15) at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn. The festival will “present a series of events, focusing on various forms of visual art, and featuring performances by artists from Africa, and throughout the African diaspora.” Performers on April 15 include Hill, Machel Montano (Trinidad), Stephen “Ragga” Marley (Jamaica), Stonebwoy (Ghana), and more. The theatre’s lobby is being transformed into an art gallery. Tonight, Hill will introduce the gallery at a private opening with music from DJ Spinna, DJ Juls, and more. The gallery will be open to the public on April 14-15 from noon to 4 p.m. Friday’s event will be livestreamed, pre-paywall, via TIDAL. Check out a poster for the event below.

In a statement about the festival, Hill said:

“Diaspora Calling! is a collection of works intended to celebrate the rich tapestry of artists from the African Diaspora while also illumining persistent and irrepressible themes… Even if we work independently, we are a resounding collective voice, both reconciling and embracing our relationship to history, our origins, our future and to ourselves.”
