Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” Charts on Hot 100 For the First Time

The original 1984 version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” has entered the Hot 100 for the first time, landing at No. 59 this week, Billboard reports. Over the last week, “Hallelujah” was downloaded 33,000 times and streamed 3.8 million times, marking a 279 percent increase, and landing it at No. 12 on the Digital Song Sales chart. The song, which has been famously covered by artists like Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright, experienced a surge in popularity following Cohen’s death on November 7. Cohen’s version previously appeared on Billboard’s Hot Singles Chart, which was based on physical sales, for one week in 2012. Other artists including Justin Timberlake, the a capella group Pentatonix, and contestants on “American Idol” and “The Voice” have charted with the song on the Hot 100. “Hallelujah” originally appeared on Cohen’s 1984 album Various Positions.
