Listen to Shirley Collins’ New Song “Cruel Lincoln” From Her First New Album in 38 Years

UK folk artist Shirley Collins has not released a new album since 1978’s For as Many as Will with her sister Dolly; her last solo record, Adieu to Old England, arrived back in 1974. In 2006, the Decemberists’ Colin Meloy celebrated her catalog with a six-song covers record. Today, the 81-year-old Collins has announced a brand new record, Lodestar, out November 4 via Domino. She’s also shared the lead single, “Cruel Lincoln.” In a press release, she explained, “This is an ancient ballad, found only rarely in England. The theory is that Cruel Lincoln was a mason who was not paid for the work he did for ‘the Lord of the Manor’ and so extracted a terrible revenge.” Hear “Cruel Lincoln,” and check out the Lodestar tracklist and cover artwork below.

Lodestar will be available as limited edition deluxe vinyl that includes a 24-page booklet featuring Shirley Collins’ song notes, and liner notes courtesy of Stewart Lee. There is also a deluxe CD edition with a 28-page booklet.
