Listen to Unreleased Demos From 17-Year-Old J Dilla

A new Boiler Room podcast, “Welcome 2 Detroit,” features the previously unreleased demo tapes of a 17-year-old J Dilla. The files are from Dilla’s own MPC. The Dilla-centric episode focuses on the 2001 album for which it’s named, and includes input from Dilla’s mentor, Amp Fiddler. The first unreleased demo plays at the 3:30 mark of the podcast, the second at the 4:30 mark, and various demos play from the 6:00 to 7:30 marks. At the 27-minute mark, Amp Fiddler breaks down an unreleased Dilla beat. Hear the full podcast below.

A lot of J Dilla music has surface in recent months. Back in August, Boiler Room released his Back to the Crib mixtape. In June, the instrumentals from his posthumous 2016 LP The Diary were released. An unreleased Kanye West mix also surfaced on a Dilla vinyl release.
