Lykke Li Discusses Singing on U2's New Album, U2 Post Behind-the-Scenes Video

One of the surprises from U2‘s new album, Songs of Innocence, was the presence of Lykke Li on the album’s closing track, “The Troubles”. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Li discussed her contribution. She said that about 18 months ago, she was invited by the album’s producer, Danger Mouse, to sing on the record. After recording at a Los Angeles studio, she was later asked to re-record her vocal this summer when the band decided to change the key of the song. The second time, Bono was there.

“Bono was very kind,” she told Rolling Stone. “He was kind of like the quiet leader, instructing me how to sing in tune – which I usually don’t. Mostly, they let me do my own thing, but we tried different things like to whisper it to someone or to scream it to someone, but it was all about creating intimacy. We turned off all the music and sang only to the drums, so it was really getting to what the core of the song meant. I had a wonderful time.” She said that Bono “referred to me as a ‘little voodoo child.’”

Li added that Bono “said I blew everyone out of the water.”

She also said that Bono informed her that his favorite song of hers is “Never Gonna Love Again”, from this year’s I Never Learn

U2 have also posted a behind-the-scenes video about the making of the album to their Twitter account.
