Mexico's “The Voice” Singer Shot and Killed in Chicago

Alejandro “Jano” Fuentes was a contestant on the first season of “La Voz… México”—Mexico’s version of “The Voice.” Fuentes died after being shot in Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood on Thursday, the Chicago Tribune reports. Fuentes had reportedly been celebrating his birthday. He was sitting in a car when the gunman approached, reportedly showed Fuentes a gun and told him to get out of the car. When Fuentes didn’t leave the car, the gunman fired multiple shots. Fuentes was shot in the head and died Saturday afternoon at Mount Sinai Hospital. He was 45.

Fuentes competed on “La Voz” in 2011. He opened his own performing arts studio in Bright Park called Tras Bambalinas—a place where young people learned singing, dancing, acting, and modeling. The studio is located on the same block where he was shot; it was also reportedly where he lived.

One week ago, singer Christina Grimmie, who competed on the U.S. version of “The Voice,” was shot and killed at a concert in Orlando.
