Michael Stipe Opens for Patti Smith With Covers Set

Patti Smith performed at the Beacon Theatre in New York last night. Michael Stipe was her surprise opener, performing a string of covers. (He did this same thing during a Smith show in New York last year, too.) He performed Neil Young’s “Old Man”, the Doors’ “People Are Strange”, Boy George’s “The Crying Game”, John Lennon’s “Imagine”, and David Bowie/Mott the Hoople’s “All the Young Dudes”. He also danced onstage with Smith during her song “People Have the Power”. Check out clips below, and head here for a longer fan recording of “All the Young Dudes”. Update (11/11 11:18 a.m. EST): A previous version of this story attributed the “The Crying Game” to Boy George; it’s actually a 1964 song by Dave Berry.
